Amarillis was born in Budapest, Hungary into an artistic family--an uncle who taught art at the National Academy and is a practicing artist and sculptor, and a father who was a commercial artist. She was educated in Switzerland and the United States, before earning her B. A. from the University of California at Los Angeles. After graduating she continued her art education at UCLA from 1977-1980, studying under Jan Stussy, Jerry Burchman and David Glines.

Ms. Kroon’s major works are figurative, in acrylic on canvas, with ink overlays to define her principal subjects: women, still lives, trees and urban street scenes and interiors. She occasionally paints her wire-fox terrier as an indulgence.

She uses a subtle but suggestive collage technique, layering gold and silver leaf with rich colors and printed texts. Her backgrounds are dynamic arrangements of abstract shapes in two and three dimensions.

Ms. Kroon now lives with her husband George, in Greenwich Village, near the Hudson River. They share their lives with their wire-haired fox terrier Nora.
